As transmitted to me by My Reiki Master Sunyata Saraswati who received it from his Tibetan Master Tsampa Yeshe Norbu Rimpoche, at the Gampo (Monastery) of the Nine Fire Dragons Trishu Shambala Raku Linki, Nepal in 1978.
Reiki was re-discovered in the late 1800’s by a Japanese Buddhist by the name of Dr. Mikao Usui of Kyoto Japan. Dr. Usui studied the Buddhist Sutras to learn how Buddha and his disciples could perform miracles and healings. To further understand Buddhism, he learned Chinese so he could read the Sutras in their earlier form. Next, Usui mastered Sanskrit in order to study Buddhism at its earliest roots in India and it’s language. He found bits and pieces of a lost healing art called “Tibetan Medicine Buddha” in the Lotus Sutra.
While studying the Mikkyo Doctrine of Mantra, Mudra and symbols of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism, Dr. Usui discovered the ancient Tibetan symbols that were once used for healing. Unfortunately the secret of how to use them had long been forgotten. While at the Shingon Temple he met his soon to be Master Lama “Tschen Li” who knew the formula to contact the Medicine Buddha. He taught Dr. Usui the “Tibetan Masters Meditation” that took twenty-one days to complete.
Dr. Usui retired to a holy mountain a few miles outside of Kyoto. Following Lama Tschen Li’s instructions, he sat on the mountain in meditation for twenty days on the symbols. In the early morning of the twenty-first day while waiting the dawning of the first light, something strange happened. He saw a light approaching from the far distance in the dark sky. It rushed faster and faster towards him. It was extremely bright, almost hypnotic and blinding. He knew it would hit unless he turned away, but after so many years of searching, he refused to turn away. The light struck him in the forehead and he was knocked unconscious.
As Dr. Usui returned to consciousness, somehow he knew several hours had passed. After the light struck him, he saw the beautiful vital colors of every shade of the rainbow pass before him. Then a huge transparent crystalline bubble appeared. In the bubble was one of the Sanskrit symbols he had re-discovered. It was accompanied by instructions as to how the symbol was thus conveyed to Dr. Usui. His quest of many years for the secrets of the Masters had finally ended. His dream had been realized.
Usui had deciphered the secret of the “Tibetan Healing Symbols”. (These symbols are called Yantras; mystical diagrams that emit light energy) They were to be drawn in the air above the body of the person to be treated. While drawing the symbols, the name of the symbol was to be repeated silently. These names were called mantras (words of power). Then the hands were placed over the person being treated. The energy of the Universe would then flow into the person.
Reiki still follows the tradition of direct initiation (energy transmission) into the Healing Art by a Master to a student. A student of Reiki is given a two thousand year old “Tibetan Initiation” by a Master. This attunes the student to the unlimited “Living Light Energy” of the Universe. This empowers the student to flow Reiki through himself and into the body of someone in need of help. The Master will also teach the student the correct pronunciation and exact configuration of the symbols.
Those who are attuned to Reiki know through direct experience the energy of the Universe can heal and restore balance to the body. Reiki has a calming effect on the body and helps generate the self-healing process caused by too much physical mental or emotional stress on the body. Reiki practitioners give themselves daily Reiki treatments to maintain harmony and health to the body.
REIKI
“THE SACRED ART”
“Reiki is probably the least known of the Japanese Healing Arts, even in Japan. It is also the youngest, being only about one hundred years old. As compared to Shiatsu, which dates, back to at least the Fifth Century A.D.
The character REI means ‘Universal Spirit’ and KI is ‘Life Energy’. In Reiki, the person providing the treatment is considered a mere conduit through which the energy of the Universal flows into the body of the person being treated. The Reiki practitioner places his hand on or over the body of the person receiving treatment and the Reiki energy is then transmitted to the receiver. Reiki does not require knowledge of meridians or acupressure points. The theory of Reiki is that the Universal Energy will flow automatically to the area in need of treatment.

The Five Precepts
Reiki is more than just a healing art. It is a philosophy of life. It provides moral guidelines or rules of proper living. Dr Usui provided the Five Precepts that all Masters teach their students.
Just for today, do not be angry.
Just for today, do not worry.
Honor your Teachers, Elders, and Parents.
Show gratitude for all that you have and for all living things.
Earn your living honestly: Do your work honestly.
The importance and profound implication of these five simple precepts may not be readily apparent to the average person. If you follow the philosophy of living expressed in these five precepts your life will be enriched greatly. The five principles are as relevant to today’s healer as they were to Dr. Usui’s original disciples almost one hundred years ago. The serious healer would do well to implement them in their life since they actually define the key “Ethical Principles” of all True Healing Arts.
Reiki is also a Spiritual practice in the sense that the energy is Spiritual in nature. In Reiki we seek to restore the harmony within the Physical, Emotional, Mental, and Spiritual Aspect of a person.
Reiki also addresses emotional wounds. While receiving Reiki treatment, sometimes “unresolved emotional” conflicts will often arise. When this happens, a sensitive and skillful Reiki Master will be able to help restore calm and peace within the person.
